Bird Island Nature Reserve is a 3-hectare CapeNature nature reserve in Lambert's Bay, South Africa. It is an important breeding site for Cape gannets and crowned cormorants.

Lambert's Bay

 

Lambert's Bay was used as a lay-up for British warships during the war of 1900-1902 and in 1901 the “HMS Sybille” was wrecked opposite Steenbokfontein. The first crayfish factory was started by Mr Lindström in 1918; the price was 1/6 and 2/6 per hundred crayfish.

BIRD ISLAND
Bird Island provides shelter and protection for thousands of seabirds, particularly Cape gannets and various
species of cormorants. The best time to visit the island is early in the morning or at sunset - when all the birds are back on the island. It is nice to watch the bird behavior when the birds meet again. Species of birds on the island: Cormorant (Trekduiker), Gannets (Lamberts Bay Bird Island is the only gannet colony in the world which can be reached by foot), sea gulls, African Penguins.

SANDVELD MUSEUM.  (082 482 9217)

  • The museum is the reflection of the way of living in the Sandveld in the late 17th century; it houses 15 different exhibits.

  • The propellor of the HMS Sybille, that ran aground here in 1901, can be viewed here.

  • Also a few Leopard Tortoises (Bergskildpaaie) can be seen here – feel free to feed them.

Namaqua Wine and Beer Tour

  • Join us for a fun day of exploring the Namaqua Wine Route. Our day starts very early when we leave Lambert’s Bay and journey through the rural towns of Graafwater, Klawer, Spruitdrift, Vredendal, Lutzville, Strandfontein and Doorn Bay. Alongside the Olifants River we meander our way through vineyard farms that are fed by the Olifants River.

Lambert’s Bay Town Tour

  • Discover “The Diamond of the West Coast” with a walk through the history of Lambert’s Bay and our scenic coastline. The beautiful gardens of the Dutch Reformed Church with its pulpit shaped like a fishing boat. The harbour with folk tales of fishing, counting of snoek and the building of the harbour and breakwater walls.

  • Please note that we do not have transport, the guide will be accompanying you in your own vehicle. Discover the smallest wine route in South Africa. “Wine of Origin Lambert’s Bay”. You will be accompanied by Nelda van Zyl, wine tour guide. We start our tour at Kookfontein Wines where we will stroll through the vineyards for a mini vineyard tour. In the over 150 year old farm house, dating back from 1840, a wine tasting of cool climate Sauvignon Blanc, chocolate and boats cheese will surprise your palate. 

Lambert’s Bay Historic Tour

  • Discover the rich history of the early inhabitants of the West Coast at Steenbokfontein caves where the oldest known examples of parietal art (wall paintings) in South Africa was found. Although these paintings are now kept safe in Cape Town, some paintings can still be seen at the caves. Enjoy freshly baked scones and “moer koffie” or tea with Kitta Burger, owner of Plaaskombuis at Steenboksfontein, and listen to the love story of Martjie en the ghost stories of the sandstone quarry.

Lambert’s Bay Harbour Tour

  • Cruise around Lambert’s Bay’s beautiful harbour on the Reflection. Enjoy the local fishing boat cruise around the famous Bird Island and view the gannets and seals. If you are lucky, you might spot some whales, dolphins or gorgeous Sun fish.

Lambert’s Bay Community Tour

  • Walking Tour - Join us on a guided outing and walk the streets of our local community. Meet interesting front runners and entrepreneur, folk-story telling legends and eat local cuisine at “Die Blikkies Kimbys”. Duration 3 hours: 09h00 13h00 (this tour is available only in the morning). Please bring your own sun hat and sun screen, insect repellent, camera and walking stick, comfortable walking shoes.

Doorspring Beach Walk

  • Guided walk – can only be done during low tide. Come and enjoy a 3 hour guided beach walk with a registered tour guide to the Doorspring private nature reserve. This walk takes you to a 9km stretch of remote white sandy beaches along the shoreline of Lambert’s Bay to the north towards Doringbaai.
